District One San Miguel County Commissioner Hilary Cooper announced that she is resigning her position effective May 8, 2023, to take a job with the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

Because Commissioner Cooper is a registered Democrat, Colorado law provides that the vacancy committee of the county Democratic Party (consisting of the SMC Democrats executive committee plus elected Democrats currently holding office in the County) selects a replacement for the remainder of the term, ending January 7, 2025. Accordingly, the Vacancy Committee is soliciting applications for the position.

Qualifications

Applicants must be registered Democrats who have been registered Democrats since April 2022 or before.

Applicants must be residents of San Miguel County, District One, since April 2022 or before. District One includes the Town of Telluride EAST of Mahoney and SOUTH of Black Bear Rd, excluding Entrada, Longwill 16, Creekside, and Shandoka F.

Includes Hillside NORTH of Hillside Lane and EAST of Eider Creek Ln. Sunnyside and Eider Creek Condos are included, as are Sunnyside Ranch, Aldasoro, and other parcels north of Last Dollar Rd. Interested persons can check the address/district status by emailing smcdems.co@gmail.com

Job Description, Salary, and Benefits

Job responsibilities: Commissioners must be available to attend weekly commissioner meetings and also serve on various boards and committees.The Board of County Commissioners approves the county budget, hires the manager and department heads, adopts ordinances, acts as the board of health, acts as the board of appeals on property assessment disputes, and other responsibilities outlined by statute.

The salary is set by statute at $84,374 for this position Category 3-B.

Benefits include health insurance for the family and a retirement fund.

Note: Fulfilling the remainder of this term does not “count” toward San Miguel County’s term limits for the Board of County

Commissioners: The person selected may, if they choose, run for up to two consecutive terms at the end of this term.
